How the Gantt chart works
A Gantt chart is a visual aid that is used in project management. It is used to display the planning of a project.
The Gantt chart gives a clear overview of all tasks that fall under a project, their duration and the relationships between them over the course of the task.
Creating a Gantt chart
The Gantt chart is located on the project in Robaws. This is project-specific and you can find it via the action button 'project planning' in the project.
You can add various levels to the Gantt chart. To add a level, you click the + sign.
You can add a grouping; to do so you click the + sign next to the column names. You can also add a subdivision that falls under a level; to do so you click the + sign next to the level concerned.
When you draw up a phase you can choose from the following:
- Project: this is an overarching chapter in the project planning. Various tasks can fall under it.
- Task: a task is a job that has to be carried out. This usually falls under the overarching project.
- Milestone: a milestone that the project works towards.
On the Gantt chart you will see the following columns. These are values you enter when you want to register a new 'phase' in the project planning via the + sign.

Startdate | Start date on which this phase starts |
Workdays | Approximate number of workdays that are predicted (this is purely information and nothing is done with it) |
Duration | The number of days you enter for 'time period', the actual number of days that are predicted for these works |
Duration | Number of days converted into the number of hours that are predicted for this |
Relationships between phases
The various phases of the Gantt chart can have a relationship with each other. This means the phases can move in relation to each other.
To achieve this, you can connect the dots of the various phases (start and end) to each other correctly.
Example:
The shell works of a complete renovation can only start once the demolition works have been fully completed.
Exporting
The Gantt chart can be used in Robaws, but you can also export it to Excel or PDF to work with it further.
You do this via the action button 'excel' and 'PDF'.
If you choose the PDF export, you get a pop-up window in which you can set a date range to export.
Example
Below, a complete example for a full renovation has been worked out visually. The example contains various projects with tasks below them and finally a milestone (handover). The phases are attached to each other by means of relationships and move in relation to each other in this way.
The following items were added to the Gantt chart:
- Project: Demolition and shell works
- Task: Demolition works, masonry, roofing, exterior joinery
- Project: Technical installations
- Task: Electricity, plumbing and heating, ventilation
- Project: Finishing
- Task: Plastering, screed, floors, kitchen and bathroom, joinery
- Milestone: Handover
