# What is an invoice image?

When an incoming invoice arrives electronically without a PDF, Robaws creates an **invoice image** itself: a representation of the invoice, built from the data in the electronic file. That way you can still read and check the invoice.

## When does Robaws create an invoice image?

Your supplier is not obliged to send a PDF along with an electronic invoice. So it regularly happens that you only receive the structured data, without a document to look at. In that case Robaws builds the image itself.

That applies to every electronic incoming invoice without a PDF:

* invoices you receive [via Peppol](https://support.robaws.com/en/article/receiving-an-incoming-invoice-via-peppol-1e664j1/)
* a [UBL](https://support.robaws.com/en/article/what-is-a-ubl-document-1clf2y/) file that comes in via the [Robawsbox](https://support.robaws.com/en/article/how-do-i-send-my-incoming-invoices-to-robaws-via-the-robawsbox-pexha/)
* a [DICO](https://support.robaws.com/en/article/how-does-the-dico-integration-work-p7yzhl/) or CII/ZUGFeRD file that comes in via the Robawsbox

For UBL, DICO and CII the corresponding setting does have to be switched on for that [Robawsbox](https://support.robaws.com/en/article/how-do-i-send-my-incoming-invoices-to-robaws-via-the-robawsbox-pexha/). You do that via **settings > incoming invoices > Robawsbox**.

||| If a PDF is included with the invoice, Robaws always shows that PDF. No invoice image is created in that case.

## What can you do with the invoice image?

You find the invoice image on the incoming invoice, in the place where the PDF would otherwise be. The approvers also get to see it in the [acceptance flow](https://support.robaws.com/en/article/acceptance-flow-c1qga3/), so they can assess the invoice.

The layout is fixed: you cannot determine it yourself and it does not follow the layout of your own documents. The image is not kept as a file either, but rebuilt every time you open the invoice.

||| The invoice image is **not a legal document**. You cannot download it, you cannot attach it to an e-mail and it is not passed on to your accounting software. If you need an official PDF, ask your supplier for one.

## I do not see an invoice image

If you see an empty document window, the incoming invoice has no electronic source file for Robaws to build an image from. That is the case, for example, for an incoming invoice you create yourself or that you start from a supply order. In that case upload the document into the incoming invoice yourself.
